STORYLINE
Here's another great historical film to add to your watchlist: The King, directed by David Michôd. Released in 2019, this epic movie draws its story from several plays of the Henriad by the renowned playwright William Shakespeare.
The King centers on the ascension of Henry V to the throne following the death of his father. In his new role, he has to navigate the complex politics of the court while dealing with the emotional remnants of his previous life.
Henry, also known as Hal (Timothée Chalamet), is a prince known for his fiery temper. Despite being the rightful heir, he has no desire to rule; he'd much prefer an ordinary life over the responsibilities of the kingdom.
However, when his infamous father, King Henry IV (Ben Mendelsohn), passes away, Hal finds himself with no choice but to take the throne. He is thrust into a life he had always tried to escape. The movie then explores whether he can rise to the occasion, becoming the wise king needed to address the issues left by his father.
