Gadis Kretek

Adapted from Ratih Kumala's 2012 novel, Gadis Kretek (Cigarette Girl) takes us on a journey into Indonesia's tobacco industry and its history. The story centers on a family that owns the largest cigarette company in the islands. What kind of events unfold in this story?

The story revolves around a kretek (clove cigarette) factory, Djagad Raya, run by Soeraja (played by Pritt Timothy and Ario Bayu). As Soeraja ages, his health declines, concerning his family. In his final days, his one wish is to see his old flame, Dasiyah, also known as Jeng Yah (Dian Sastrowardoyo).

This leads Soeraja's three children - Lebas (Arya Saloka), Karim (Dimas Aditya), and Tegar (Winky Wiryawan) - set out on a journey to find Jeng Yah, even with very little information. Their journey across the entire island of Java leads them to someone who has important information about the history of Soeraja and the origins of Kretek Djagad Raya.

Their journey reveals the story of how their father and Jeng Yah met, through ups and downs, betrayals, deep love, and other key moments that defined their relationship. The children witness the saga of their relationship, culminating in a poignant reunion before Soeraja's passing.
