10 Ultimate Iron Man Armors Ever Worn by Tony Stark

Written by Mutiara Dwi C.K.

Iron Man is one of the most iconic superheroes in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU), renowned for his high-tech armor. Tony Stark's armor usually features red and gold hues.

Tony Stark has developed many models of Iron Man armor, each unique in its own way. Every suit incorporates advanced technology, often equipped with AI.

This review will cover the main armors used by Tony Stark, from the Iron Man trilogy and The Avengers to cameos in other MCU films.

1. Mark I

The Mark I armor is the first suit created by Tony Stark and Ho Yinsen. This armor was built under limited conditions in a cave and is predominantly silver, without any additional paint.

Tony Stark's first suit laid the foundation for all future armor designs. Despite being primitive compared to later versions, the Mark I showcased Stark's ingenuity. It possesses great technology, given the circumstances of its creation.

Although not as advanced as later models, the Mark I provides superhuman strength, endurance, and stamina. It can also fly, though only briefly, and is equipped with flamethrowers and missiles.

2. Mark III

The Mark III armor is the classic suit worn by Tony Stark. This is Stark's third armor, developed by improving the deficiencies of the Mark I and Mark II, both featured in Iron Man (2008).

The Mark III was the first armor to integrate advanced weapon systems and apply the iconic red and gold colors. It represents an evolution of the initial Mark I design and set the standard for all subsequent armors.

While wearing this suit, Tony Stark defeated a terrorist group in the Middle East and his former mentor, Obadiah Stane, also known as Iron Monger.

3. Mark VI

The Mark VI armor first appeared in Iron Man 2 (2010). It succeeded the Mark IV, featuring a sleeker design and more advanced capabilities than its predecessors.

The arc reactor in this armor is triangular, unlike the circular ones in earlier versions. The Mark VI is equipped with a grenade launcher in one hand, a missile launcher on the shoulder, and powerful lasers on both palms. It retains the classic red and gold color scheme.

With this armor, Tony Stark defeated Whiplash, captured Loki, and repaired the Helicarrier. However, the Mark VI was damaged in Iron Man 3.

4. Mark VII

The Mark VII is Tony Stark's seventh armor. It returns to a circular arc reactor design after the triangular one in the Mark VI. This suit combines the best features of the first six versions, offering improved flight capabilities and a more advanced weapon system.

It enhances the wearer's physical abilities, including durability, speed, and reflexes, making it more advanced than previous models. However, it is not designed for space travel. The Mark VII was used in The Avengers (2012) before being destroyed in Iron Man 3.

5. Mark XLII

The Mark XLII first appeared in Iron Man 3 (2013) and later in Spider-Man: Homecoming. Tony Stark continuously develops his armor, and the Mark XLII is one of the most unique and powerful suits.

It was designed as Iron Man's main armor after the Battle of New York and the creation of the Iron Legion. The Mark XLII can be controlled remotely and disassembled, allowing it to be reassembled for use. Despite its advanced capabilities, the Mark XLII has some defects due to instability and is considered a prototype.

6. Mark XLV

The Mark XLV debuted in Avengers: Age of Ultron (2015), following the Mark XLIII. The Mark XLV was used after the previous suits were damaged during battles against Ultron and the Hulk. Tony Stark wore this armor to fight Ultron in Sokovia, making it his latest combat suit at that time.

The reactor design in the Mark XLV is a circular hexagon, with a predominantly red color compared to gold. The helmet design is similar to the Mark XLIII but with a more curved and streamlined shape.

Like most of Tony Stark's latest armors, the Mark XLV's capabilities are enhanced, especially when equipped with the new AI, F.R.I.D.A.Y.

7. Mark XLVI

The Mark XLVI armor closely resembles the Mark XLV in design. However, the helmet can fold back, a new feature introduced in this model. The Mark XLVI was developed after the Mark XLV was damaged in the Battle of Sokovia.

Tony Stark used this armor in Captain America: Civil War (2016). Its design was inspired by the Iron Man Bleeding Edge from the comics. Reactors are distributed throughout the suit, significantly enhancing Iron Man's strength.

Stark wore this armor during his fight with Captain America and the Winter Soldier at HYDRA's Siberian facility.

8. Mark XLVII

The Mark XLVII armor features a predominantly silver color on the head, chest, and thighs, with accents of red and gold. This suit's design is based on the Iron Tech Armor from the Ultimate Universe in the comics. Essentially, it has a similar structure to the Mark XLVI but with a different color scheme.

Tony Stark wore this armor in a supporting role in Spider-Man: Homecoming (2017). The Mark XLVII can be controlled remotely and is equipped with heavier weaponry than the War Machine armor.

9. Mark L

This armor, also known as Bleeding Edge, was inspired by the Prime model armor in the comics. Tony Stark created it to replace the Mark XLVII armor. It was used during the war in Avengers: Infinity War (2018) to fight Thanos.

This armor is highly advanced, incorporating nanotechnology that allows it to build, shape, and redesign itself. This makes the armor not just a combat tool, but a ‘factory’ that can adapt in the middle of a battle.

Inside the armor are reserves of chemicals and substances that can produce weapons and other tools, like missiles. Additionally, the armor resembles a muscular leotard.

Its slimmer and more muscular design makes it stronger, more agile, and flexible. It is considered the strongest armor compared to Iron Man's previous suits.

10. Mark LXXXV

The Mark LXXXV armor is similar in design to the Mark L but is slightly larger. This armor was created after the Mark L was destroyed by Thanos and is the most advanced and powerful suit ever made by Tony Stark.

Unlike the Mark L, the Mark LXXXV combines mechanical armor with muscle. Learning from previous defeats, Stark made this armor more capable of withstanding the kind of damage and impacts that Thanos can inflict.

Tony Stark used the Mark LXXXV in the final battle in Avengers: Endgame (2019).

These are the 10 main armors used by Tony Stark in the Iron Man film series and other MCU films. However, there are other notable suits as well.

The Hulkbuster armor, for instance, is the largest design and was used when fighting the Hulk. Additionally, the War Machine armor, heavily armed and armored, was made by Stark for his friend and ally, James Rhodes.
