STORYLINE

What is The Lover about?

The Lover is an erotic romantic drama film released in 1992, directed by Jean-Jacques Annaud. It’s based on the semi-autobiographical novel by Marguerite Duras, set in Vietnam in the late 1920s.

The story follows a 15-year-old French girl living with her poor family in Vietnam. She meets a wealthy 32-year-old Chinese man who is captivated by her beauty. Despite their different backgrounds, they quickly begin an intimate and secret romance.

However, their love faces challenges from social norms and cultural differences. The French girl struggles to adapt to life in the French colony, while the Chinese man is under pressure from his family to marry someone of the same background and social status.

The Lover explores themes of forbidden love, cultural clash, and the complexities of human emotions, set against the backdrop of colonial Vietnam. Will their love endure, or will it succumb to the societal barriers that stand in their way? Watch The Lover to find out.
